If you have a child who is headed off to college in the fall, this may be a better season than most to file an appeal and negotiate your financial award! If you are still undecided about which college to attend, now is the time to file or even re-file your appeal as colleges are eager to bring in students for this coming fall! (The one upside for parents of current High School Seniors due to a global pandemic.) While many schools typically will negotiate, not all do. And, it also depends on the reason for the appeal. Due to the Coronavirus, many schools are now fearful of students opting for a gap year or of making an alternate decision that what was originally intended. (Read Inside Higher Ed article here.) Therefore, since the schools still need revenue to operate, they need to ensure that all seats will be filled. If you had previously filed an appeal that was denied, it may be time to request another.
If you have not yet filed an appeal, now may be a great time! Make sure to make a strong case for your appeal. Include all of the reasons as to why your child belongs at that school and the reasons why they should offer your child more in financial aid (free money; not additional loans!) If you need any assistance, or have any questions, College Financial Prep is here to help with all aspects of the College Financial Aid process!
